Sapiéntia ubi invenítur? et quis est locus intelligéntiæ?  Nescit homo prétium ejus, nec invenítur in terra suáviter vivéntium.  Abyssus dicit : Non est in me, et mare lóquitur : Non est mecum.  Non dábitur aurum obrízum pro ea, nec appendétur argéntum in commutatióne ejus ; non conferétur tinctis Indiæ colóribus, nec lápidi sardónycho pretiosíssimo vel sapphíro.

But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?  Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.  The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.  It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.  It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Indúta est caro mea putrédine, et sórdibus púlveris cutis mea áruit et contrácta est : * Meménto mei, Dómine, quóniam ventus est vita mea.

Non adæquábitur ei aurum vel vitrum, nec commutabúntur pro ea vasa auri.  Excélsa et eminéntia non memorabúntur comparatióne ejus ; tráhitur autem sapiéntia de occúltis.  Non adæquábitur ei topázius de Æthiópia, nec tinctúræ mundíssimæ componétur.  Unde ergo sapiéntia venit? et quis est locus intelligéntiæ?  Abscóndita est ab óculis ómnium vivéntium ; vólucres quoque cæli latet.  Perdítio et mors dixérunt : Auribus nostris audívimus famam ejus.

The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.  No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.  The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.  Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?  Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.  Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.

R.  Páucitas diérum meórum finiétur brevi ; dimítte me, Dómine, ut plangam páululum dolórem meum, * Antequam vadam ad terram tenebrósam et opértam mortis calígine.
V.  Manus tuæ, Dómine, fecérunt me, et plasmavérunt me totum in circúitu ; et sic repénte præcípitas me?
R.  Antequam vadam ad terram tenebrósam et opértam mortis calígine.

R.  My days are few, and in a short while they will be ended ; let me alone, then, O Lord, that I may bewail my sorrow a little, * Before I go to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death.
V.  Thine hands, O Lord, have made me, and fashioned me together round about ; and yet dost thou forthwith destroy me?

In Feastdays of Simple rank :

And on such Feastdays of Simple rank, the Third Lesson is read according to the Proper.

Proper Third Lesson

Deus intélligit viam ejus, et ipse novit locum illíus ; ipse enim fines mundi intuétur, et ómnia, quæ sub cælo sunt, réspicit.  Qui fecit ventis pondus, et aquas appéndit in mensúra.  Quando ponébat plúviis legem et viam procéllis sonántibus, tunc vidit illam et enarrávit et præparávit et investigávit.  Et dixit hómini : Ecce timor Dómini, ipsa est sapiéntia, et recédere a malo, intelligéntia.

God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.  For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; to make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.  When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.  And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

R.  Non abscóndas me, Dómine, a fácie tua : manum tuam longe fac a me, * Et formído tua non me térreat.
V.  Córripe me, Dómine, in misericórdia, non in furóre tuo, ne forte ad níhilum rédigas me.
R.  Et formído tua non me térreat.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Et formído tua non me térreat.

R.  Hide not thy face from me, O Lord, withdraw not thine hand far from me ; * Let not thy dread make me afraid.
V.  O Lord, correct me, but with mercy, not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
