Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God : that we who year by year devoutly keep this holy ordinance of fasting, may serve thee acceptably both in body and soul.  Through.

In illo témpore : Prope erat Pascha Judæórum, et ascéndit Jesus Jerosólymam : et invénit in templo vendéntes boves, et oves, et colúmbas.  Et réliqua.

At that time : The Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves.  And so on, and that which followeth.

Quid audívimus, fratres?  Ecce templum illud figúra adhuc erat, et ejécit inde Dóminus omnes qui sua quærébant, qui ad núndinas vénerant.  Et quæ ibi vendébant illi?  Quæ opus habébant hómines in sacrifíciis illíus témporis.  Novit enim cáritas vestra, quod sacrifícia illi pópulo pro ejus carnalitáte, et corde adhuc lapídeo, tália data sunt, quibus tenerétur, ne in idóla deflúeret : et immolábant ibi sacrifícia, boves, oves et colúmbas.  Nostis, quia legístis.

What things are these, my brethren, which we have just heard?  Mark ye!  This temple was no more than a figure of the Church which was yet to be.  Nonetheless the Lord drove out from thence all them that sought their own advantage, and such as were come to deal in merchandise.  And what was it that they sold therein?  Only such things as were needful for the sacrifices that then were.  For ye know, dearly beloved, what kind of sacrifices were given to God's people in those days ; and how that by reason of their carnal-mindedness, and because their hearts were yet stony, there was commanded unto them to offer such sacrifices as would hold them back from idolatry.  Accordingly they offered up oxen and sheep and doves.  This ye know, for ye have read the Scriptures.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

On Feastdays having an Office of Nine Lessons during Lent, the Te Deum is said after the conclusion of the Ninth Lesson.

R.  Vos, qui transitúri estis Jordánem, ædificáte altáre Dómino * De lapídibus, quos ferrum non tétigit : et offérte super illud holocáusta, et hóstias pacíficas Deo vestro.

Non ergo magnum peccátum, si hoc vendébant in templo, quod emebátur ut offerétur in templo : et tamen ejécit inde illos.  Quid si ibi ebriósos inveníret, quid fáceret Dóminus, si vendéntes ea quæ lícita sunt, et contra justítiam non sunt (quæ enim honéste emúntur, non illícite vendúntur) éxpulit tamen, et non est passus domum oratiónis fíeri domum negotiatiónis?

Surely it is no great sin if they sold in the temple what men were wont to buy with the intent of offering same in the temple.  Nonetheless he drove these sellers out.  Wherefore, if the Lord drove out them which sold such things as be lawful, and not contrary to righteousness (for things which may be honestly bought are not unlawfully sold), and suffered not the house of prayer to be made an house of merchandise, what would he have done if he had found drunkards in his temple?

R.  Audi, Israël, præcépta Dómini, et ea in corde tuo quasi in libro scribe : * Et dabo tibi terram fluéntem lac et mel.
V.  Obsérva ígitur, et audi vocem meam : et inimícus ero inimícis tuis.

R.  Hear, O Israel, these words which I command thee this day ; write them on the tables of thine heart like as in a book : * And I will give thee a land that floweth with milk and honey.
V.  Beware therefore, and hear my voice : and I will be an enemy unto thine enemies.

Si negotiatiónis domus non debet fíeri domus Dei, potatiónis debet fíeri?  Nos autem quando ista dícimus, strident déntibus suis advérsus nos : et consolátur nos Psalmus, quem audístis : Stridérunt in me déntibus suis.  Nóvimus et nos audíre unde curémur : etsi ingeminántur flagélla Christo, quia flagellátur sermo ipsíus.  Congregáta sunt, inquit, in me flagélla, et nesciébant.  Flagellátus est flagéllis Judæórum : flagellátur blasphémiis falsórum Christianórum : multíplicant flagélla Dómino Deo suo, et nésciunt.  Faciámus nos, quantum ipse ádjuvat.  Ego autem, cum mihi molésti essent, induébam me cilício, et humiliábam in jejúnio ánimam meam.

If the house of God ought not to be made an house of buying and selling, ought it then to be made an house of drinking?  But when we speak thus, there be some that gnash upon us with their teeth.  Yet we are comforted by that Psalm which ye have just now heard : They gnashed upon me with their teeth.  Yea, from the words of this Psalm we know whence cometh our healing ; even from Christ, upon whom the scourges fell over and over again, because he had scourged them by his words : for this Psalm putteth such a saying into the mouth of the Lord : Scourgings came together against me plentifully, but they were unaware thereof.  He was scourged by the scourges of the Jews.  He is scourged afresh by the blasphemies of false Christians.  These latter multiply scourgings upon the Lord their God, and are unaware of what they do.  As for us, let us do according to what he saith in this Psalm, which same he will help us to do, to wit : But as for me, when they troubled me, I put on sackcloth, and humbled my soul with fasting.

R.  Sicut fui cum Móyse ita ero tecum, dicit Dóminus : * Confortáre, et esto robústus : introdúces pópulum meum ad terram lacte et melle manántem.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
