Venite, exsultemus Domino

Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo, salutári nostro : præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord ; let us heartily rejoice in the God of our salvation.  Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving ; and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms.

Psalmus 28.  Afferte Dómino

Afférte Dómino,† fílii Dei: * afférte Dómino fílios aríetum.
2  Afférte Dómino glóriam et honórem, afférte Dómino glóriam nómini ejus: * adoráte Dóminum in átrio sancto ejus.
3  Vox Dómini super aquas, Deus majestátis intónuit: * Dóminus super aquas multas.

Deus noster refúgium, et virtus: * adjútor in tribulatiónibus, quæ invenérunt nos nimis.

God is our hope and strength, * a very present help in trouble, which hath found us exceedingly.
2  Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved, * and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea;
3  Though the waters thereof rage and swell, * and though the mountains shake at the strength of the same.
4  The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God; * the Most Highest hath made holy his tabernacle.
5  God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed; * God shall help her, and that right early.

R.  Three are the precious gifts, of divine and mystic meaning, which the Wise Men at this time presented to the Lord : *  Gold the King's Majesty betokeneth ; and mark ye how incense sheweth the Great High Priest, and myrrh the Lord's burial.

Dearly beloved, we are instructed by the traditions of the Fathers, that on this solemnity we are to celebrate several joyful events.  They tell us that on this Feast we are to commemorate : first, the coming of star-led Gentiles to worship the Lord Christ ; secondly, our Lord's miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding-feast to which he had been bidden ; and thirdly, his Baptism from John, whereby he hallowed the waters of the Jordan, and cleansed him that baptized him.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the King : Behold, there came Wise Men from the East to Jerusalem, saying : Where is he that is born King of the Jews?   And so on, and that which followeth.

We have seen his star in the East.  In order that the Jews might be confounded by hearing from the Gentiles of the birth of Christ, the star rose in the East.  They knew that it would come, from the prophecy of Balaam, whose successors they were.  See the Book of Numbers.  The star led the Wise Men to Judaea, that the priests, having it demanded of them where Christ should be born, might have no power to plead that they knew not of his coming.

And they said unto him : In Bethlehem of Judaea.  Here is a mistake of copyists.  In our opinion, what the Evangelist wrote must have been, not Judaea, but Judah, since this it is in the Hebrew text.  For what other Bethlehem is there of any other nation, that this one should be described as of Judaea, that is, as of the Jews, for the sake of distinction?  But the writer might well have written concerning a Bethlehem of Judah, because there is another Bethlehem, namely, the one in Galilee.  See the Book of Joshua the son of Nun.  Moreover, the very quotation : In Bethlehem of Judaea : readeth in the Hebrew text of the Prophet Micah : But thou, Bethlehem of Judah.

And when they had opened their treasures they presented unto him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.  The mystic meaning of these gifts is neatly expressed by Juvencus the Priest in his couplet : Frankincense, myrrh, and gold they bring, As gifts to God-made-Man, their King.  And the Gospel continueth : Being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.  They who had presented unto the Lord gifts, were honoured by receiving a warning, not from an Angel, but from God himself ; whereas even Joseph was warned only by an Angel.  They departed into their own country another way, that they might not be brought into conflict with the unbelief of the Jews.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
