Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. |

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: but as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. Quóniam Dei mori non póterat Sapiéntia, resúrgere autem non póterat quod mórtuum non erat ; assúmitur caro, quæ mori posset : ut dum móritur quod solet, quod mórtuum fúerat, hoc resúrgeret. Neque enim póterat esse, nisi per hóminem, resurréctio : quóniam sicut per hóminem mors, ita et per hóminem resurréctio mortuórum. Ergo resurréxit homo, quóniam homo mórtuus est : resuscitátus homo, sed resúscitans Deus. Tunc secúndum carnem homo, nunc per ómnia Deus. Nunc enim secúndum carnem jam nóvimus Christum, sed carnis grátiam tenémus, ut ipsum primítias quiescéntium, ipsum primogénitum ex mórtuis novérimus. |
The Wisdom of God could not die. And what could not die could not rise from the dead. Therefore the Wisdom of God took to himself flesh which could die, so that that what is wont to die (as is its nature) might die, and rise again. Moreover the resurrection of the dead could not come otherwise than by man ; for since by man came death, by Man came also the resurrection of the dead. Therefore, as Man, he arose again, since it was as Man that he had died. And thus Manhood was quickened but the Godhead was the Quickener. He was Man, then, as touching the flesh ; but now he is God over all things. For we know Christ no longer after the flesh ; but we owe it to the flesh that we know him as the first-fruits of them that slept, and the first-begotten of the dead. |

Primítiæ útique ejúsdem sunt géneris atque natúræ, cujus et réliqui fructus : quorum pro lætióre provéntu primitíva Deo múnera deferúntur ; sacrum munus pro ómnibus, et quasi reparátæ quædam liba natúræ. Primítiæ ergo quiescéntium Christus. Sed utrum suórum quiescéntium, qui quasi mortis exsórtes, dulci quodam sopóre tenéntur, an ómnium mortuórum? Sed sicut in Adam omnes moriúntur, ita et in Christo omnes vivificabúntur. Itaque sicut primítiæ mortis in Adam, ita étiam primítiæ resurrectiónis in Christo omnes resúrgent. Sed nemo despéret, neque justus dóleat commúne consórtium resurgéndi, cum præcípuum fructum virtútis exspéctet. Omnes quidem resúrgent, sed unusquísque, ut ait Apóstolus, in suo órdine. Commúnis est divínæ fructus cleméntiæ, sed distínctus ordo meritórum. |
The first fruits are of the same kind and nature as the other fruits, and they are brought as an offering to God, to win his blessing on the ingathering ; an holy offering made on behalf of all, and as it were the homage of restored nature. Christ then is the first-fruits of them that sleep. But is he the first fruits only of his own beloved ones? That is, only of those who fall asleep in him, and lie as it were untouched by death, wrapt in a sweet slumber? Or is he the first-fruits of all the dead? But (as Scripture saith) as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. So that, as in Adam were the first-fruits of the death, wherein all do die, even so in Christ were the first-fruits of the resurrection, wherein we all do rise again. But let no man be hopeless ; neither let the righteous think it a belittlement of righteousness that the resurrection will be common to all men ; for the righteous do rightly look forward to that day wherein the harvest of his life will nobly realize itself. All indeed shall rise again, but, as saith the Apostle : Every man in his own order. The harvest of God's mercy will be for all, but in reward one man shall differ from another. |

Advértimus, quam grave sit sacrilégium, resurrectiónem non crédere. Si enim non resurgémus, ergo Christus gratis mórtuus est, ergo Christus non resurréxit. Si enim nobis non resurréxit, útique non resurréxit, qui sibi cur resúrgeret, non habébat. Resurréxit in eo mundus, resurréxit in eo cælum, resurréxit in eo terra. Erit enim cælum novum, et terra nova. Sibi autem non erat necessária resurréctio, quem mortis víncula non tenébant. Nam etsi secúndum hóminem mórtuus, in ipsis tamen erat liber inférnis. Vis scire quam liber? Factus sum sicut homo sine adjutório, inter mórtuos liber. Et bene liber, qui se póterat suscitáre, juxta quod scriptum est : Sólvite hoc templum, et in tríduo resuscitábo illud. Et bene liber, qui álios descénderat redemptúrus. |
We note how grievous an outrage against God it is not to believe in the resurrection. If we shall not rise again, then did Christ die in vain, then is Christ not risen. For if he rose for us, and if he had not us to rise for, then certainly, he is not risen. In him the world, in him the heavens, in him the earth rose again. For there shall be a new heaven, and a new earth. He needed not to rise again, so far as it concerned himself, whom death could not hold in bonds. For although he died as Man, yet was he free in the netherworld itself. Wouldest thou hear how free? I am as a man that hath no strength, free among the dead. Well is he called free, who was able to take up his life again at will, even as he had said : Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Well is he called free, who descended into hell only to redeem others therefrom. |

We have now to consider these words of the Lord : Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my Name, he will give it you. It hath already been said in the previous part of this Sunday's discourse (for the benefit of those who ask the Father in Christ's Name and receive not), that whatsoever is asked, which tendeth not to salvation, is not asked in the Name of the Saviour. By the words : In my Name : we must not understand the vocalization of letter and syllables, but the meaning of what is said, the honest and true meaning of the words : In my Name. |

Unde qui hoc sentit de Christo, quod non est de único Dei Fílio sentiéndum, non petit in ejus nómine, etiámsi non táceat lítteris ac syllabis Christum : quóniam in ejus nómine petit, quem cógitat cum petit. Qui vero quod est de illo sentiéndum sentit, ipse in ejus nómine petit : et áccipit quod petit, si non contra suam salútem sempitérnam petit. Accipit autem quando debet accípere. Quædam enim non negántur : sed ut cóngruo dentur témpore differúntur. Ita sane intelligéndum est quod ait : Dabit vobis : ut ea benefícia significáta sciántur his verbis, quæ ad eos, qui petunt, próprie pértinent. Exaudiúntur quippe omnes Sancti pro seípsis, non autem pro ómnibus exaudiúntur vel amícis, vel inimícis suis, vel quibúslibet áliis : quia non utcúmque dictum est, Dabit ; sed, Dabit vobis. |
Hence, whosoever thinketh that Christ is not the only-begotten Son of God, such an one doth not ask anything in Christ's Name, even though he do actually utter letters and syllables to that effect, because by these sounds he meaneth not the real Christ, but a fancied being who hath no existence except in the speaker's imagination. But on the other hand, whosoever thinketh of Christ as he ought to think, the same asketh in Christ's Name, and receiveth, provided only it be nothing against his own everlasting salvation ; but if it be good for him to receive, he receiveth. Some things are not given at once, but kept over till a more fitting season. Such is the true interpretation of the words : He will give it you : namely, that to them that ask, all such things will be given as are good for them. All the saints also are heard when they ask for themselves, but not necessarily when they ask for their friends or their enemies, or others, even as it is written, not simply : He will give it : but rather : He will give it to you. |

Quidquid ergo pétitur, quod pertíneat ad hoc gáudium consequéndum, hoc est in nómine Christi peténdum, si divínam intellígimus grátiam, si vere beátam póscimus vitam. Quidquid autem áliud pétitur, nihil pétitur : non quia nulla omníno res est, sed quia in tantæ rei comparatióne quidquid áliud concupíscitur, nihil est. |
Hitherto, saith the Lord, have ye asked nothing in my Name ; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. This their joy, whereof he saith that it shall be full, is to be understood not of fleshly but of spiritual joy ; and when that joy is so great that it can be increased no more, then shall it without doubt be full. Therefore, whatsoever is asked which concerneth the fulfilling of this joy (that is, if we thereby aspire to receive God's grace, and so do ask for that life which is the really blessed one), that same is a thing which it is meet to ask in Christ's Name. If we ask anything else than this, we ask nothing (even though we think within ourselves that we are asking for something), because all things are nothing in comparison with this. |
