If our Saviour, dearly beloved, had not accomplished his triumph over the devil in the flesh of human nature, he would have done no more than exercise himself, for in such a case he would not have conquered for us.  If he had not risen again in our body, he would have done nothing for our nature by his resurrection.  And anyone that asserteth such things (all which proceed from the false doctrine that Christ hath but one nature) doth not understand why the Lord assumed flesh.  Yea, such an one mistaketh the meaning of the incarnation, and emptieth the same of all value to mankind.  If he did not work our cure in the nature common to the human race, then all that he took upon himself was the degradation of being born as man.  But God forbid that any of us should hold to such dangerous errors!  What he took is ours ; what he gave is his.  That which fell I testify to be mine, that which rose again may be mine also.  What lay in the grave I testify to be mine, that which ascended into heaven may be mine also.

It was therefore because his body was of our nature, that Christ's death hath restored us to life, that his Resurrection raised us up, that his Ascension sanctified us.  Because his body was of our nature, his presence in the heavenly kingdom is a pledge that we also shall one day be there.  Let us strive, then, dearly beloved (since the Lord hath as at this time gone up on high in a body of our nature), to ascend after him in hope, as far as we are able, and to follow him thither in heart.  Let us ascend to him in love, and use even our very sins and passions as a means of progress.  If every one of us would strive to get above them, and accustom himself to tread on them, he might make of them a stepping-stone to mount to higher things.  Such things lift us up if they are underneath us.

We make a ladder out of our very sins, if we tread them down.  No malice did ascend when the Author of all good went up ; no lust nor sensuality went along with the Virgin's Son.  Vice doth not ascend after him who is the Author of virtue, nor sin after the Righteous One of God, neither weakness nor disease after the Divine Healer.  If therefore we would enter into the kingdom of that Healer, we must first take heed to our sores.  We must so order and guard in us the mutual relations of our soul and body, that the soul, the nobler part of man, may not be dragged down to hell by her grovelling companion, but may rather, being herself of a nature more glorious, bear with her to heaven at the last a sanctified body, by the help of him who liveth and reigneth for ever and ever.  Amen.

Christi enim sanguis sic in remissiónem peccatórum ómnium fusus est, ut ipsum étiam peccátum posset delére, quo fusus est.  Hoc ergo íntuens Dóminus dicébat : Odio habuérunt me gratis : cum autem vénerit Paráclitus, ille testimónium perhibébit de me.  Tamquam díceret : Odio me habuérunt, et occidérunt vidéntes : sed tale de me Paráclitus testimónium perhibébit, ut eos fáciat in me crédere non vidéntes.  Et vos, inquit, testimónium perhibébitis, quia ab inítio mecum estis.  Perhibébit Spíritus Sanctus, perhibébitis et vos.  Quia enim ab inítio mecum estis, potéstis prædicáre quod nostis : quod ut modo non faciátis, illíus Spíritus plenitúdo nondum adest vobis.

The blood of Christ, which is shed for many for the remission of sins, was so effectually shed, that it could remit even the very sin that shed it.  Having this in mind, the Lord said : They hated me without a cause.  And again he said : But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, he shall testify of me.  This was as though he had said : They hated me, and slew me in that time when they were able to see me ; but now, when they shall see me no more, the Comforter shall bear such testimony of me, as will compel them to believe in me.  And ye also, saith he, shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.  See thus how he saith that the Holy Ghost shall bear witness , and ye also shall bear witness.  That is to say : Because ye have been with me from the beginning, ye are able to speak that ye do know ; but as yet ye do not know, for as yet the fulness of the Spirit is not come upon you.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Si enim non abíero, Paráclitus non véniet ad vos : si autem abíero, mittam eum ad vos. * Cum autem vénerit ille, docébit vos omnem veritátem, allelúja.
V.  Non enim loquétur a semetípso : sed quæcúmque áudiet, loquétur : et quæ ventúra sunt, annuntiábit vobis.
