| Oremus. Concéde, quæsumus, omnípotens Deus : ut, qui hodiérna die Unigénitum tuum Redemptórem nostrum ad cælos ascendísse crédimus; ipse quoque mente in cæléstibus habitémus. Per eúmdem Dóminum. |
Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God : that like as we do believe thine only-begotten Son our Saviour to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity. |

Invitatory and Hymn |
|
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Psalmus 94. |
Venite, exsultemus Domino |
|
Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo, salutári nostro : præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei. |
O come, let us sing unto the Lord ; let us heartily rejoice in the God of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving ; and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos : quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam : quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit. |
For the Lord is a great God ; and a great King above all gods: For the Lord will not cast off his people: In his hand are all the corners of the earth, and the strength of the hills is his also. |
|
Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
In the following verse of the Psalm, at the words veníte, adorémus, et procidámus ante Deum (O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker) all genuflect. |
|
|
The sea is his and he made it ; and his hands prepared the dry land. O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker: For he is the Lord our God ; and we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Hódie, si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne, secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto : ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea. |
Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness ; when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works. |
|
Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi : Semper hi errant corde ; ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas : quibus jurávi in ira mea : Si introíbunt in réquiem meam. |
Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways: unto whom I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculórum. Amen. |
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
|
Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. |

Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. |

Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. |

When Christ went up into heaven, we offered unto the Father the first-fruits of our nature. And the Father beheld the offering, noting that One of so great Majesty was the Priest, and that his oblation was a Sacrifice unspotted. Wherefore God received the Sacrifice into his own hands, and made the Same to sit upon his throne. Nay more, unto this same Christ our Sacrifice he gave a place at his own right hand. Let us therefore consider what nature was Christ's, who then heard the words : Sit thou on my right hand. Yea, let us consider what nature was his to whom God thus said, Be thou partaker of my Throne. It was the same nature as was his who heard the sentence : Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. |

It was not enough for him to pass through the heavens to the height of glory. It was not enough for him to be ranked with Angels. But making his circuit of the very heavens themselves, he went up above the Cherubim ; he ascended beyond the Seraphim ; and rested not until he had attained the Throne itself of the Lord of lords. Behold how high the heaven is above the earth, and the earth above hell ; and how high above the heaven is the heaven of heavens! And how high above the heaven of heavens are the Angels ; and above the Angels the higher powers, and above the higher powers the Throne of the Lord! And over all these hath one of our nature been exalted, so that man, which had fallen so low that there was no farther fall for him, is now in a place so high that he could ascend no higher. |

Paul also, dwelling on this, saith : He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, even as he had said : Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? Learn hence who it was that ascended, and with what nature he was exalted. And with this thought I wish to bring my sermon to an end, namely : That, as we remember what the human race is, we may learn with wonder what the goodness of God is ; by whom our nature hath been crowned with an honour (higher than which is none), and a glory (greater than which is none), in Christ who this day took the place which is his of right, above all things other than himself. This day Angels and Archangels behold our nature upon the Throne of the Lord, refulgent with eternal glory. |

At that time : Jesus appeared unto the eleven disciples as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart : because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And so on, and that which followeth. |

So then, after the Lord Jesus had spoken unto them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven, where he now sitteth on the right hand of God. We learn in the Old Testament that Elijah was taken up into heaven. But this word Heaven is used in various senses. For example, it can mean either the terrestrial atmosphere (that is, the aeriel heaven), or something which is not of the sphere of this planet (that is, the ethereal heaven), and of these, the aerial heaven is close to the earth ; whence we speak of the birds flying in the heavens. So hath come to pass the belief, that it was only up into this aeriel heaven that Elijah was taken ; that he might thence be carried off suddenly into some part of the earth, to us unknown, and there live in profound peace of body and soul, until the end of the world, when he will return and pay the debt of nature. On this wise, we may say that death waiteth but is not escaped. But our Redeemer made it not to wait for him, but conquered it, and by rising again shattered it, and by his Ascension shewed forth the glory of his resurrection. |

We must mark also, how that Elijah was taken up in a chariot, as though to shew plainly that for a mere man some outward help was needful. This help was given to him by Angels, as plainly appeareth, since it was impossible for one whom a weak nature yet weighed down earthward, to fly up even into the atmosphere. But of our Redeemer we read not that he was borne up in a chariot, or by Angels, since he, by whom all things were made, clearly rose above all things by his own power from on high. He returned unto him with whom he already was ; and whither he returned, there he hath always been ; because, even though in his Manhood he ascended up into heaven, yet in his Godhead, he still comprehended both heaven and earth. |
