| Oremus. Concéde, quæsumus, omnípotens Deus : ut, qui hodiérna die Unigénitum tuum Redemptórem nostrum ad cælos ascendísse crédimus; ipse quoque mente in cæléstibus habitémus. Per eúmdem Dóminum. |
Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God : that like as we do believe thine only-begotten Son our Saviour to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity. |

Invitatory and Hymn |
|
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Psalmus 94. |
Venite, exsultemus Domino |
|
Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo, salutári nostro : præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei. |
O come, let us sing unto the Lord ; let us heartily rejoice in the God of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving ; and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos : quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam : quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit. |
For the Lord is a great God ; and a great King above all gods: For the Lord will not cast off his people: In his hand are all the corners of the earth, and the strength of the hills is his also. |
|
Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
In the following verse of the Psalm, at the words veníte, adorémus, et procidámus ante Deum (O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker) all genuflect. |
|
|
The sea is his and he made it ; and his hands prepared the dry land. O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker: For he is the Lord our God ; and we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Hódie, si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne, secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto : ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea. |
Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness ; when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works. |
|
Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi : Semper hi errant corde ; ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas : quibus jurávi in ira mea : Si introíbunt in réquiem meam. |
Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways: unto whom I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculórum. Amen. |
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
|
Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
O come, let us worship, alleluia. |
|
Allelúja, Christum Dóminum ascendéntem in cælum, * Veníte adorémus, allelúja. |
Alleluia, Christ the Lord, who hath ascended into heaven, * O come, let us worship, alleluia. |

This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. |

|
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. |

R. Omnis

|
Vos ígitur, fratres, præsciéntes custodíte, ne insipiéntium erróre tradúcti excidátis a própria firmitáte. Créscite vero in grátia, et in cognitióne Dómini nostri et Salvatóris Jesu Christi. Ipsi glória et nunc, et in diem æternitátis. Amen. |
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. |

The visible presence of our Redeemer in the body was, after the Ascension, exchanged for his invisible presence in the Sacrament. And then a hearing of the truth was given to the Church in place of a looking upon the Truth, so that her faith might be nobler and stronger ; for which reason the hearts of believers are enlightened by the heavenly Light, that they may perceive within themselves the truth of the doctrine which they have accepted on her authority. The Faith (thus increased by the Ascension of the Lord, and established by the gift of the Holy Ghost), hath withstood all things. Neither have bonds, nor imprisonment, nor exile, nor famine, nor fire, nor savage beasts, nor any torment devised by cruelty, wherein they that persecute us are well skilled, been able to overcome it. On behalf of this Faith there have striven throughout the whole world, even unto the out-pouring of their blood, not men only, but women also ; not young boys only, but tender maidens. This is the faith which hath cast out devils, healed diseases, raised the dead. |

Hence even the blessed Apostles themselves (who had been comforted by so many miracles and taught by so many discourses) were sickened at the horrors of their Lord's passion, and received but doubtfully the assurance of his resurrection, till after the Lord's Ascension. Which so profited them, that all that had been fearful to them before became joyful then. The reason was that they had lifted up all their mind to think of the Godhead of him who sitteth at the right hand of the Father. And therefore there were no longer hindered (by the interposition of bodily vision) in directing the whole attention of their mind toward him ; wherefrom they perceived that he, in descending to earth, had never been absent from his Father, and in ascending up into heaven, had never withdrawn himself from his disciples. So then it was, dearly beloved, after he had betaken himself to the glory of his Father's Majesty, that the Son of Man was recognized to be the Son of God in a more perfect and sacred way. For in some unspeakable manner he began to be more present as to his divinity, when he became farther off as to his humanity. |

|
Then it was that a better instructed faith began intelléctually to approach the idea of a Son equal to the Father, and no longer to need any concern over the humanity of Christ as of a nature inferior to the Father. For, whereas the nature of the glorified body remained, the faith of believers ascended to that place where the only-begotten Son, co-equal with the Father, might be touched, not by a hand of flesh, but by spiritual understanding. Hence it was that after his resurrection, when Mary Magdalene (who in this matter representeth the whole Church) wished to handle the Lord, he said : Touch me not ; for I am not yet ascended to my Father. That is : I no longer will that thy nearness to me should be a nearness of body to body ; nor that the recognition of me should henceforward proceed from thy bodily senses ; I send thee away to something higher ; I am preparing for thee something nobler ; after that I have ascended to my Father, then a time will come when thou shalt indeed touch me, but in a manner more perfect and more real than this, even a time when thou shalt lay hold on that which now thou canst not touch, and shalt believe that which now thou canst not see. |

At that time : Jesus appeared unto the eleven disciples as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart : because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And so on, and that which followeth. |

And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my Name they shall cast out devils ; they shall speak with new tongues ; they shall take up serpents ; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them ; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. My brethren, these signs do not follow us. Do we, then, not believe? Nay, the truth is, these things were needful when the Church was young. That she might grow by the increase of the faithful, she needed to be nourished with miracles. Even so we, when we plant a young tree, continually water and tend it till we see that it hath taken firm root in the earth ; but when once it hath taken firm root, it can grow of itself. Hence Paul saith of tongues : Tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not. |

We have a deeper matter of thought concerning signs and mighty works. It is the work of the holy Church to do every day spiritually that which the Apostles then did in a bodily manner. When her priests, armed with the power of absolution, do stretch forth their hands unto unbelievers, and forbid evil spirits to dwell any longer in their souls, what is it they do but cast out devils? When Christ's faithful people themselves give up the language of their old life, and speak the wonderful works of God, the glory and power of their Maker, telling of them with all their strength, what is it they do then, but speak with new tongues? When any Christian by his exhortation charmeth the wickedness out of his neighbour's heart, what is it that he then doeth but take up serpents? |
