Et factum est in diébus Achaz fílii Jóatham, fílii Ozíæ regis Juda, ascéndit Rasin rex Syriæ, et Phácee fílius Romelíæ rex Israël, in Jerúsalem, ad præliándum contra eam : et non potuérunt debelláre eam.  Et nuntiavérunt dómui David, dicéntes : Requiévit Syria super Ephraim, et commótum est cor ejus, et cor pópuli ejus, sicut movéntur ligna silvárum a fácie venti.  Et dixit Dóminus ad Isaíam : Egrédere in occúrsum Achaz tu, et qui derelíctus est Jasub fílius tuus, ad extrémum aquædúctus piscínæ superióris in via Agri fullónis.

And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.  And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.  Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Ecce virgo concípiet, et páriet fílium, dicit Dóminus : * Et vocábitur nomen ejus Admirábilis, Deus, Fortis.
V.  Super sólium David, et super regnum ejus sedébit in ætérnum.
R.  Et vocábitur nomen ejus Admirábilis, Deus, Fortis.

R.  Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, saith the Lord : *   And his Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God.
V.  He shall sit upon the throne of his father David, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
R.  And his Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God.

Et dices ad eum : Vide ut síleas : noli timére, et cor tuum ne formídet a duábus caudis titiónum fumigántium istórum in ira furóris Rasin regis Syriæ, et fílii Romelíæ :  eo quod consílium iníerit contra te Syria in malum Ephraim, et fílius Romelíæ, dicéntes : Ascendámus ad Judam, et suscitémus eum, et avellámus eum ad nos, et ponámus regem in médio ejus fílium Tábeel.

And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.  Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R.  Deo grátias.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R.  Thanks be to God.

R.  Audíte verbum Dómini, Gentes, et annuntiáte illud in fínibus terræ : * Et ínsulis, quæ procul sunt, dícite : Salvátor noster advéniet.
V.  Annuntiáte, et audítum fácite : loquímini, et clamáte.
R.  Et ínsulis, quæ procul sunt, dícite : Salvátor noster advéniet.

R.  Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and proclaim it in the ends of the earth : * And declare it in the isles afar off, and say : Our Saviour shall come.
V.  Publish it and make it known ; lift up your voice and cry aloud.

Et adjécit Dóminus loqui ad Achaz, dicens : Pete tibi signum a Dómino Deo tuo in profúndum inférni, sive in excélsum supra.  Et dixit Achaz : Non petam, et non tentábo Dóminum.  Et dixit : Audíte ergo, domus David : Numquid parum vobis est, moléstos esse homínibus, quia molésti estis et Deo meo?  Propter hoc dabit Dóminus ipse vobis signum.  Ecce virgo concípiet, et páriet fílium, et vocábitur nomen ejus Emmánuel.  Butyrum et mel cómedet, ut sciat reprobáre malum, et elígere bonum.

Moreover the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying, Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.  But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.  And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R.  Ecce dies véniunt, dicit Dóminus, et suscitábo David germen justum : et regnábit rex, et sápiens erit, et fáciet judícium et justítiam in terra : * Et hoc est nomen quod vocábunt eum : * Dóminus justus noster.
V.  In diébus illis salvábitur Juda, et Israël habitábit confidénter.
R.  Et hoc est nomen quod vocábunt eum.
V.  Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.
R.  Dóminus justus noster.

R.  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch ; and a King shall reign in wisdom and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth : * And this is his Name, whereby he shall be called :  * The Lord our Righteousness.
V.  In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely.
R.  And this is his Name, whereby he shall be called.
V.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R.  The Lord our Righteousness.

The Office of Matins ends after the Third Respond.  The Te Deum is not said, and Lauds normally follows immediately, beginning with the Opening Versicles.  Otherwise, the Conclusion of Matins is read, according to the Rubrics.
