The first part of Vespers is in the Ordinary

On excepted feasts the Antiphons and Psalms are as follows.  Otherwise the Antiphons and Psalms are of the current weekday, with what follows as below from the Chapter onwards.

From Miletus Paul sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.  And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons; serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and in trials which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews : and how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.  And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:  save that the Holy Ghost testifieth unto me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.  But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I may finish my course with joy, and the Ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the Gospel of the grace of God.

I say again, let us declare to the holy Martyrs what grace the Lord's Passover doth promise them!  Let us tell them that even as the seals of his sepulchre were broken and the stone rolled away, even so shall their graves be set open and earth's hold on their remains forever broken.  Let us tell them that even as his dead body was warmed with sudden life and returning power, even so shall their members, now cold in the dust of death, glow with the warmth of immortal vigour.  For that power which hath already raised their Lord from death will one day give resurrection to them his Martyrs.  For as they have followed him in his sufferings, so also shall they follow him in his newness of life.  It is written in the Psalms : Thou shalt shew me the path of life.  These words may be understood as the speech of the Saviour at his Resurrection, for after he died and came up again from hell, he began to take knowledge of the path of life which aforetime was not known.

Brethren, this passage of the Gospel, wherein the Lord saith that he is the vine, and that his disciples are the branches, is to be taken in the sense wherein it is also said that he is the head of the Church, and that we are his members ; members verily of him who is the Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.  A vine and its branches are of one and the same nature.  Wherefore, being God, of whose nature we are not, he was made man to the end that might have in himself our human nature (that is, this vine) whereof we men can be made branches.

Quid ergo est, Ego sum vitis vera?  Numquid ut ádderet, vera, hoc ad eam vitem rétulit, unde ista similitúdo transláta est?  Sic enim dícitur vitis per similitúdinem, non per proprietátem, quemádmodum dícitur ovis, agnus, leo, petra, lapis anguláris, et cétera hujúsmodi ; quæ magis ipsa sunt vera, ex quibus ducúntur istæ similitúdines, non proprietátes.  Sed cum dicit, Ego sum vitis vera ; ab illa se útique discérnit cui dícitur : Quómodo convérsa es in amaritúdinem, vitis aliéna?  Nam, quo pacto est vitis vera, quæ exspectáta est ut fáceret uvam, fecit autem spinas?

Why doth he say : I am the true vine?  By adding the word True, doth he mean that he is literally a vine?  Surely not, for he could not be called a vine in the literal sense, but only by way of similitude, like as elsewhere he is called a Sheep, a Lamb, a Lion, a Rock, a Cornerstone, and other things of the like kind.  Now these things are true in the sense that they are what they seem to be, but when he is called by the name of them, he is so called by way of similitude.  However, in this respect they differ from the similitude of the vine which he used in this passage.  For herein he hath regard to another Scriptural similitude, namely, of something which seemed to be a vine, and was not, as it is written : I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed ; how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?  For how can that be called a true vine of which grapes are expected and it bringeth forth thorns?

I am the true vine, saith he, and my Father is the husbandman.  Is then the vine one with the husbandman as Christ is with his Father?  For Christ is the vine in the sense that he saith : My Father is greater than I.  But according to that his other saying : I and my Father are one : he himself is the husbandman.  However, he is not an husbandman in the literal sense of one who serveth as the vine-dresser, but in this sense, namely, that from within the vine itself he giveth increase in growth and fruitage.  For neither is he that planteth anything, neither is he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase.  But verily Christ is God ; for the Word was God.  Therefore he and the Father are one.  And albeit the Word was made flesh, which afore he was not, nonetheless he ceased not to be what he was, namely, God.
