4  He hath made a memorial of his marvellous works; the Lord is merciful and gracious : * he hath given meat unto them that fear him.

4  He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh them to scorn: *  the Lord shall have them in derision.

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a good work.  A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)  Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.  Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

For a Bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; but a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.  For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the Circumcision: whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Very meet and right it is on this day which hath been made a holy day for us by the passage to paradise of our blessed Father N., that we should sing this verse of the Psalms : The righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.  Right worthy is he to be had in remembrance amongst men who is at this present keeping holy-day amongst Angels.  The word of God saith : Judge none blessed before his death, as though to say Judge a man blessed only when his life is ended ; praise him only when he is made perfect.  For there is a two-fold reason why it is better to praise a dead man than a living ; to call a man holy and worthy after his death can never be participation in the sin of flattery on the part of him that praiseth, nor of vanity on the part of him that receiveth the praise.

9  Thou shalt make them like a fiery oven in time of thy wrath: * the Lord shall destroy them in his displeasure, and the fire shall consume them.

Psalmus 23. Domini est terra

Dómini est terra, et plenitúdo ejus: * orbis terrárum, et univérsi qui hábitant in eo.
2  Quia ipse super mária fundávit eum: * et super flúmina præparávit eum.
3  Quis ascéndit in montem Dómini? * aut quis stabit in loco sancto ejus?
4  Innocens mánibus et mundo corde, * qui non accépit in vano ánimam suam, nec jurávit in dolo próximo suo.
5  Hic accípiet benedictiónem a Dómino: * et misericórdiam a Deo, salutári suo.
6  Hæc est generátio quæréntium eum, * quæréntium fáciem Dei Jacob.

Dearly beloved brethren, this Lesson from the Holy Gospel warneth us to beware lest we, who have received more in in this world than others, should on that account be judged the more severely by the Maker of this world.  To whom much is given, of the same is much required.  Therefore let him that receiveth much, humble himself much, and be ready to do God much service, according to the much that he hath received, knowing that he will be obliged to render a strict account thereof.  Behold how the man, travelling into a far country, calleth his own servants, and delivereth unto them talents, to the end that they may trade therewith.  But after a long time, the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.  And to them that have done well he rendereth a reward of their labours.  But to that servant which was careless of his master's work he hath nothing to render save retribution.

V.  Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

V.  But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
