The mystery of our reconcilation was ordained from all eternity, and could not be fulfilled by mere figures. For the Holy Ghost had not yet come upon the Virgin, nor had the power of the Highest overshadowed her, that Wisdom building her house in the womb of a Virgin, the Word might become flesh. For only then were the form of God and the form of a servant built into union in one Person, to the end that the Maker of all time might himself be born in time. Thus he, by whom all things were made, might himself be conceived among all those things that were made. For unless this New Man, he who is consubstantial with the Father, had deigned to be also consubstantial with his Mother, whereby he who is alone free from sin had united our nature to himself, all mankind would have remained captive under the yoke of the devil. |
