Psalm 32  Exsultate, justi

God, the Lord of the world

This Psalm portrays God as the Good Shepherd over nature, over the affairs of men and especially over his adopted children.  We may here meditate on God's loving providence in the order of nature and in the order of grace.

Praise our all-merciful God

Exsultáte, justi in Dómino: * rectos decet collaudátio.
Confitémini Dómino in cíthara: * in psaltério decem chordárum psállite illi.
3  Cantáte ei cánticum novum: * bene psállite ei in vociferatióne.

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; * for it becometh well the just to be thankful.
2  Praise the Lord with harp; * sing praises unto him with the lute, and instrument of ten strings.
3  Sing unto the Lord a new song; * sing praises well unto him with a loud noise.
4  For the word of the Lord is true; * and all his works are faithful.
5  He loveth mercy and judgment; * the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

The almighty Creator

7  Cóngregans sicut in utre aquas maris: * ponens in thesáuris abyssos.

6  By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; * and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
7  He gathereth the waters of the sea together, as it were upon an heap; * and layeth up the deep, as in a treasure-house.
8  Let all the earth fear the Lord: * stand in awe of him, all ye that dwell in the world.
9  For he spake, and they were made; * he commanded, and they were created.

The all-wise Ruler

10  The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought, * and maketh the devices of the people to be of none effect, and casteth out the counsels of princes.
11  But the counsel of the Lord shall endure for ever, * and the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.

Searcher of hearts

12  Beáta gens, cujus est Dóminus, Deus ejus: * pópulus, quem elégit in hereditátem sibi.

12  Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord; * and blessed are the folk that he hath chosen to him, to be his inheritance.
13  The Lord looketh down from heaven, * and beholdeth all the children of men.
14  From the habitation of his dwelling, * he considereth all them that dwell on the earth.
15  He who hath fashioned all the hearts of them, * and understandeth all their works.

He defies the wicked

16  The king is not saved by the multitude of an host; * neither is the mighty man delivered by his great strength.
17  A horse is counted but a vain thing to save a man; * neither shall he be delivered by the abundance of his strength.

He aids the virtuous

18  Ecce óculi Dómini super metuéntes eum: * et in eis, qui sperant super misericórdia ejus :
19  Ut éruat a morte ánimas eórum: * et alat eos in fame.

18  Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, * and upon them that put their trust in his mercy;
19  To deliver their soul from death, * and to feed them in the time of dearth.

Finale (Confidence)

21  Quia in eo lætábitur cor nostrum: * et in nómine sancto ejus sperávimus.
22  Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos: * quemádmodum sperávimus in te.

20  Our soul hath patiently tarried for the Lord; * for he is our help and our protector.
21  For our heart shall rejoice in him; * because we have hoped in his holy Name.
22  O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
