The blessings of the Law |
|
Psalm 118 is a long poem in praise of the Divine Law. Despite all its repetition,
it has most
fittingly been chosen for the Little Hours on Sunday. An often
repeated glance heavenward in the midst of the day's conflict is quite
proper. Throughout these Little Hours is heard the theme "I will
fulfill the will of God, and fulfill it with a spirit of fidelity, and
perseverance." Psalm 118 is the rosary of the psalter.
The 176 verses of Psalm 118 are divided into
twenty-two sections, or strophes, of eight verses each, in each of which
strophes all the verses begin with the same letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
The first eight, for example, begin with Aleph, which somewhat corresponds
to our letter "A".
To facilitate devotion, we concentrate on one
principal thought in each strophe.
The first four strophes fit perfectly into the
general plan of Prime: good intention, preparation for the day.
