Friday Matins

God is faithful―Israel is untrue

The Matins Psalms present a history of the Jewish people which is at the same time a history of falling away from God.  It is an unbroken chain of sin, infidelity, ingratitude; and its final, logical link is the greatest crime of all: the murder of their Messiah.  Matins is thus a background history for the Passion of Christ.

In the story of Israel's sins we must not fail to recognize our own sins, and admit our share of the guilt in our Lord's death upon the Cross.

Repentance for our sins and gratitude for the long-suffering and patience of God―these are the chief themes of Matins on Friday.  We meditate them with the Cross in view.


First Nocturn

Psalm 77
God's providence in the history of Israel
To me, too, God was faithful:  I was the faithless one

The Psalm is a sort of poetic chronicle, recording the history of Israel from the exodus out of Egypt up to the crowning of King David.  God's long-suffering patience is vividly depicted.  Despite the constant infidelity of Israel, his patience is not exhausted.  We must figurátively strike our breast when we pray this Psalm; we marvel at God's patience with ourselves.

Psalm 77. i.  Attendite, popule

Hearken unto the lesson of history

Atténdite, popule meus, legem meam: * inclináte aurem vestram in verba oris mei.
2  Apériam in parábolis os meum: * loquar propositiónes ab inítio.
3  Quanta audívimus et cognóvimus ea: * et patres nostri narravérunt nobis.

Hear my law, O my people; * incline your ears unto the words of my mouth.

The Covenant with Jacob

In the far past

Punishment of their unbelief

Their apparent conversion

The promised land

Unfaithful in the promised land

Defeat at Silo

Psalm 78
Heathen atrocities in Jerusalem

This Psalm depicts one of the saddest episodes of Jewish history:  Jerusalem and the temple are destroyed, the Gentiles loot and kill, Israel is sunk in deepest shame―a punishment for the infidelity of the chosen people.

The destruction of the sanctuary is at the same time a reminder of the modern-day destruction of the modernists, with their man-oriented liturgies.  In the latter half of the Psalm we plead for the destruction of the enemies of the Church, not with any malice or thoughts of vengeance, but for the manifestation of God's divine justice upon those who would desecrate his holy places.

Finally, this destruction of the sanctuary can be seen as an image of Christ's death:  "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up" (John 2:19).  We think about the temple of the soul, violated by sin, and in the Church's name we pray for the conversion of sinners.

Jerusalem desolate

Deus, venérunt Gentes in hereditátem tuam, polluérunt templum sanctum tuum: * posuérunt Jerúsalem in pomórum custódiam.

Plea for punishment of enemies

Promise of thanksgiving

14  But we are thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, * we shall give thee thanks for ever.

Psalm 80.  Exsultate Deo

God's solemn reproach
"My people, my people, what have I done unto you?"

This Psalm brings to light another picture from the history of Israel.  The people are all assembled for a solemn festival.  The Lord of the Covenant is giving them an urgently appealing sermon, and this is the climax:  "In your hands lie death and life; choose:  life, if you obey―death, if you are faithless like your forefathers."

Christ's death on the Cross shewed that the Jews chose death and final rejection.

The Christian might well picture Christ addressing the same sermon to him from the Cross.  In our hands, too, lie life and death.

Invitation to the festival

Exsultáte Deo, adjutóri nostro: * jubiláte Deo Jacob.
2  Súmite psalmum, et date tympanum: * psaltérium jucúndum cum cíthara.
3  Buccináte in Neoménia tuba, * in insígni die solemnitátis vestræ.

Deliverance from Egypt

Psalm 82.  Deus, quis similis?

Beset by enemies

Another dismal page of Jewish history.  The kingdom is surrounded by an alliance of enemies.  They are determined to wipe the nation out.  The Psalm is a fervent plea for God's help; he will not turn his back upon his inheritance.

The Psalm present two pictures:

  1. Our blessed Lord surrounded by his enemies, being led off to his death; we hear his prayer and lamentation.
  2. The Catholic Church, new Israel, beset by enemies; but "the gates of hell shall not prevail against her."

The enemy alliance

Deus, quis símilis erit tibi? * Ne táceas, neque compescáris, Deus.

9  Disperiérunt in Endor: * facti sunt ut stercus terræ.
10  Pone príncipes eórum sicut Oreb, et Zeb, * et Zébee, et Sálmana:
11  Omnes príncipes eórum: * qui dixérunt : Hereditáte possideámus Sanctuárium Dei.

8  But do thou to them as thou didst unto Madian and Sisera, * and unto Jabin at the brook of Kison;
9  Who perished at Endor, * and became as the dung of the earth.
10  Make their princes like Oreb and Zeb; * even like as Zeba and Salmana;
11  Yea, all their princes : * who have said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.

Destroy them utterly

12  Deus meus, pone illos ut rotam: * et sicut stípulam ante fáciem venti.
13  Sicut ignis, qui combúrit silvam: * et sicut flamma combúrens montes:
14  Ita persequéris illos in tempestáte tua: * et in ira tua turbábis eos.
15  Imple fácies eórum ignomínia: * et quærent nomen tuum, Dómine.

12  O my God, make them like unto a wheel, * and as the stubble before the wind;
13  Like as the fire that burneth up the wood, * and as the flame that consumeth the mountains;
14  So shalt thou pursue them in thy tempest, * and trouble them in thy wrath.
15  Fill their faces with shame, * and they shall seek thy Name, O Lord.

Finale

16  Erubéscant, et conturbéntur in sæculum sæculi: * et confundántur, et péreant.
17  (fit reverentia) Et cognoscant quia nomen tibi Dóminus: * tu solus Altíssimus in omni terra.

16  Let them be confounded and vexed ever more and more; * let them be put to shame, and perish.
17  (all bow) And they shall know that the Lord is thy Name, * thou alone art the Most Highest over all the earth.
